Our History

Hills Books is a family run business established in 1890 by William Coulson Hill and currently managed by the 5th generation of the Hill family, Paul and Zoe Hill.  It all started when their great great grandfather delivered newspapers to the steelworkers of Workington which led to the opening of a newsagents on Corporation Road.

At its retail peak there were three Hills newsagents in the town centre before eventually the company moved on to become a predominantly wholesale business. The business is now based on Clay Flatts Industrial Estate in Workington, where there is a large showroom open to the public.  Since 1970 Hills has been the main supplier of books to schools, colleges, libraries and a variety of retail outlets all based in Cumbria.
